Plastics news from quick pak inc

US Industry Forecasts US demand for plastic film is expected to grow 1.9 percent annually to 16 billion pounds in 2016. Advances will also be helped by an increase in the use of film in packaging, where it offers advantages in cost, performance and source reduction over other packaging materials. The versatility of plastic film increasingly allows for the downgaugiug of packaging reducing the amount of material needed and lowering production and shipping costs, while maintaining desired characteristics. Trade Reports November 2012 Linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) will remain the most widely used film, representing almost 50 percent of demand in 2016. Due to its relatively low cost and versatility, LLDPE will see gains in diverse markets such as packaging for snack foods and produce, medical and pharmaceutical products, and stretch and shrink wraps. Conventional low density polyethylene (LDPE) will grow at a slower pace as it is supplanted by better performing LLDPE in man

Polyethylene resin supply was improved and prices softened slightly. Weak export demand and falling Crude Oil prices have lowered the floor price which has been supporting the domestic market. For the second month in a row, Polyethylene resin producers were unable to implement their $.05/lb price increase; sure they will give it another shot in November, but buyers seem a bit weary. Polyethylene For the third week in a row spot Polyethylene prices eased slightly. Film processors have backed away from buying, reporting healthy inventory already on hand and citing only moderate demand for their finished goods. Although upstream resin inventories grew in September, they are still relatively light, but balanced off by unenthusiastic buying activity, both domestic and export. Resin producers have not overtly diminished their intent to increase October resin prices by 5c/lb watch this space...

Market Update & Summary Oct 1th 2012: Spot resin markets were mostly steady to a half-cent higher in moderate trading. Railcar offerings continue to run at a below average pace and resellers’ inventories are also on the light-side, those processors in need of spot material are reluctantly bidding up the market to get material. September resin contracts are seeing very little movement. Polyethylene contracts are mostly steady, although those buyers that only went up $.03/lb in August are paying $.02/lb more this month; industry-wide contracts are now up $.05/lb for Aug/Sept. It looks like PP contracts are increasing just $.01/lb in Sept, on the low side of expectations; PGP was initially nominated to increase $.025-.04/lb. The US energy markets fell in volatile trading and November, quoted here, began rolling to the front month. Nov Crude Oil futures bounced off the week’s low of $91.55/bbl to settle at $92.89/bbl on Friday, a net loss of $6.44/bbl. Nov Natural Gas futu

Commodity resin prices were mostly steady to a tad higher; trading activity improved and widespec availability increased. For the most part, Generic Prime railcars remain elusive, although some material began to appear at the end of the week. Polyethylene contracts are mostly flat in September; however, those processors that only went up $.03/lb in Aug will add $.02/lb this month, bringing the market up $.05/lb industry wide for Aug/Sept. Aug Polypropylene contracts followed monomer down $.015/lb, but will reverse in Sept and jump $.025-.04/lb.

Resin and stretch film pricing

The commodity resin markets continued to rise and spot offerings dwindled to very low levels into month-end. Polyethylene and Polypropylene prices both added a penny, driven by already tight supplies along the Petrochemical chain which were further restricted by Hurricane Isaac. Although the storm passed through the Gulf without causing much reported damage to plants, most Crude Oil and Natural Gas platforms were shut in and several Petrochemical complexes also closed or ran at reduced output levels. The vast majority of these facilities have now resumed or are in the process of returning to normal production. August PE contracts were up $.03 - .05/lb depending on producer, while PP contracts slid $.015/lb. There are price increases nominated for both materials for September. Resin Market Update & Summary July 11th 2012:

Summary The spot resin markets were mixed and offers were relatively light during the holiday interrupted week. Polyethylene prices were $.005-.01/lb higher building on the penny gains from the previous week; the minor recovery in Polypropylene stalled and prices slipped back a penny. July PP contracts are settling steady along with PGP monomer, PE contracts are offered steady and could possibly even see a little more erosion in July. Export activity has started to improve, but Houston traders’ inventories generally remain plentiful. US energy markets extended their gains, but then gave way at the end of the week to actually close lower. August Crude Oil futures reached nearly $89/bbl, the highest level since late May, but fell back to settle at $84.45/bbl on Friday with a net loss of $.51/bbl. August Natural Gas prices surged above $3/mmBtu for the first time since February, before collapsing to end the week at $2.776/mmBtu, down almost a nickel. The Crude Oil: Nat Gas price rat

Resin and poly pricing July 2012

U.S. ethylene prices rise after hitting 20-month low in June. Prices for the chemical building block ethylene recovered at the end of June from the lowest level in 20 months as short-term supply concerns briefly resurfaced. The ethylene price touched 39.5 cents per pound on June 13, extending its drop from a seven-year high of 75.12 cents per pound on April 5 after unplanned plant outages and scheduled maintenance caused supply to fall short of demand. Resin Pricing from Quick Pak Inc June 5th 2012

Spot Polyethylene prices continued to unravel, with penny losses widely seen this week. There were also occasions of month-end specials for multiple railcars with a larger discount. Producers yielded to the pressure to reduce May contracts in excess of the $.04/lb offered, most have now agreed to lower contracts by $.07/lb. With (spot) Ethylene costs cratering, upstream resin inventories bulging and negative sentiment abounding, it is expected that June contracts will also be marked lower. Processors are looking to wipe away at least the balance of the $.11/lb of increases that were implemented Dec-Mar and perhaps achieve more than just the remaining $.04/lb. Export markets remain weak, falling energy and feedstock costs around the world have market participants de-stocking and those that need resin, purchasing from nearby locations to reduce the price risk during transit. Resin Pricing May 30th 2012 by quick pak inc

Efforts to stem price erosion in May have been dashed and weak feedstock markets allied with softening demand now point to a an even further drop in June pricing. Trade Reports May 2012 Three commodity resin prices drop. Prices for three major commodity resins - polyethylene, polypropylene and PVC - have tumbled in May, as resin makers suddenly found themselves with too much of a good thing. The good thing in this case is ethylene feedstock. With several petrochemical crackers fixed up and back online, there's more ethylene - and propylene - available than at any point this year so far. Trade News May 2012 Prices for polyethylene slid another $.02/lb; the market is now down $.08/lb over the past 6 weeks. Falling energy and feedstock costs have contributed to the negative sentiment gripping the market. Resin producers have offered to drop May contracts by $.04/lb and in the meantime have been generally willing to meet lower-priced competitive situations. Domestic purchasing

Market Update & Summary May 29th 2012: Spot resin trading activity was good, lower prices were welcomed by buyers filling in supply gaps from the inventory drawdown while awaiting this price relief. Although transactions were many, volumes remain small as the general consensus is that the market will continue to ease. Average Polyethylene prices shed another $.02/lb; continued spot weakness leads some to believe that May contracts, although offered by producers down $.04/lb, could ultimately settle with a larger discount. May Polypropylene contracts settled down $.10/lb along with PGP; however, spot Polypropylene prices dropped another $.04/lb this past week, catching up to the break in the spot Propylene monomer market. The recent trend of lower Crude Oil and higher Natural Gas prices remains intact. July Crude Oil futures, which are rolling to the front month, dropped $4.69/bbl to $91.80/bbl, the lowest in about 6 months. July Natural Gas prices rallied $.233/mmBtu to e

LLDPE Resin Pricing by quick pak inc

Polyethylene prices shed $.02/lb, which brings the rolling 30-day loss to $.06/lb. The break comes amid ample material availability, quickly falling monomer prices and lower contract prices. Despite tight feedstock supplies and high spot costs, producers ran reactors above 90% in April, which proved way too much considering the lowest domestic demand in 2 years and while exports are the worst since Jan 2009. Efforts to implement even part of the $.07/lb Polyethylene increase in May have already been dashed weak feedstock markets now point to a steep drop in May pricing. Trade Reports May 2012 After first quarter increases and a steady month of April, resin buyers are eyeing falling markets and are looking to share in upstream cost savings. The shift in the pricing cycle seems to be underway. Once the down trend is solidly confirmed, which does appear imminent, it could last for a while. Indicating ever-decreasing resin feedstock costs for at least the balance of 2012. Resin Pricing news from quick pak inc.com

Spot resin activity picked up this past week and more typical trade flow, like we might expect for the first week of the quarter, resumed after the previous week at NPE. Despite April price increase nominations, traders offered their warehoused inventories for sale at prices steady to a tad lower than March levels looking for orders. Energy and feedstock costs were weak and resin market sentiment began shifting away from bullish and would be considered neutral, but not bearish at this point. No support for stretch price increases MARKET DYNAMICS Natural Gas Prices Dip to $2 First Time in Decade The last time natural gas touched $2 was Jan. 28, 2002, as it dropped to $1.91. Natural gas prices have been tumbling all year. A mild winter and a production boom have left the U.S. with more natural gas than Americans can consume. The glut has pushed prices down by 59 percent since a peak last summer at $4.85. The excess gas has benefited homeowners and businesses that use it to heat homes and power factories. Resin Pricing news 4.4.2012 by quick pak inc

Consider that the March $.03/lb increase is, with Ethylene sprinting higher there is little reason for producers to cave in at this point. If secured, this would complete the $.06/lb increase on top of the nickel implemented in December for a 4-month run of $.11/lb. With another $.07/lb that comes into play in April, traders with inventory will likely raise their asking prices to start the month. However, there is one producer that already pushed the $.07/lb increase off until May, although no other producers were seen following that lead. Trade Reports April 2012 LLDPE: The Polyethylene market was fairly busy, particularly the first part of the week, as sellers looked to move out material as the month and 1st quarter came to an end. Polyethylene producers remained committed to secure the balance of the $.06/lb price increase, half of which was implemented in February. While this second $.03/lb really could have gone either way, as the month drew to a close, no producer had blinked

Resin processors (film producers) , well-stocked with inventory, are resisting efforts to secure the $.03/lb balance of the $.06/lb price increase partially implemented in February. Demand, both domestic and export, was slower in Feb than some had anticipated contributing to the swell in inventories. Ample resin availability at reasonable market prices is easing buyers’ concerns about prices rising further, for now. Resin prices today from quick pak inc

Polyethylene prices pushed a penny higher, but it was not a very impressive showing considering that $.03 -.10/lb of price increases are on the table. Although it is still early in the month, market conditions might challenge the current price increases initiative, especially beyond the $.03/lb balance remaining from February. Trade Analyst March 2012 At the moment it seems that Polyethylene resin producers will be hard-pressed to increase contracts beyond the $.03/lb remaining on the Feb increase, which is also not a slam dunk. Film processors are working down hefty inventories accumulated from aggressive purchases before the increases. Polyethylene prices were mostly steady; offers generally reflect at least half of the $.06/lb price increase still sought for February. Price negotiations are again coming down to the wire; while no producers have conceded the increase, overall demand is questionable and might thwart the effort for the second month in a row, perhaps it will split at $.03/lb.
