Choose the Right Packaging Tape for Shipping
Supply chains place real demands on packaging. Long freight
routes, repeated handling, and fluctuating temperatures all affect carton
performance. From heat and humidity to cold storage and coastal conditions,
using the wrong packaging tape can compromise seal strength and carton
integrity. Selecting the right tape helps ensure secure shipments and less
damage in transit.
As freight rates continue to rise, every damaged carton hits
your bottom line twice. Once to replace the goods, and again from the wasted
freight cost. Choosing the most suitable packaging tape is one of the simplest,
cheapest ways to reduce risk and protect your reputation.
Why Does Adhesive Matter? Packaging tape is a
pressure-sensitive adhesive tape used to seal cardboard cartons for storage and
shipping. Different tapes are engineered for different loads, environments, and
handling conditions.
The adhesive is the most important factor. It determines
whether your tape will hold under pressure, in heat, in the cold, or on
recycled cardboard. Two adhesive types dominate the market: acrylic and hot
melt. Making the wrong choice becomes a costly mistake. A tape that works well
in your warehouse may fail inside a hot trailer or shipping container.
When to Choose Acrylic Tape: Acrylic tape is a
cost-effective option for standard fulfilment environments with controlled
conditions. It performs reliably in stable temperatures and offers excellent UV
and ageing resistance. However, in hot or humid environments, or when applied
to recycled or rough cardboard, acrylic adhesives can lose grip over time.
When to Choose Hot Melt Tape: Hot melt tape,
typically made with synthetic rubber adhesive, provides a stronger and faster
initial bond. It performs better in humid conditions, on recycled or rough
cardboard, and in high-stress applications.
When deciding on the right packaging tape, keep these factors in mind:
Carton Size: Larger or irregularly shaped cartons require
stronger tape to maintain a secure seal.
Content Weight: The heavier the package, the stronger the
adhesive and backing need to be.
Production & Shipping Environment: High-volume
production lines, temperature variations and rough handling all impact tape
performance.
