What is Eco-Friendly Packaging?

Image
Eco-friendly packaging, also known as sustainable or green packaging, is packaging that is more friendly to the environment than the harmful alternatives. Eco-friendly packaging uses materials and manufacturing practices that have a small/non-existent impact on natural resources and energy consumption, including being made from recycled or plant-based materials. It is also often easy to recycle or easily dispose of in a non-harmful way (such as by being biodegradable), unlike many plastics that cannot be recycled and end up in landfills or an incinerator, producing damaging substances in the process. The way packaging is designed can even make it eco-friendly. A lot of sustainable packaging is designed to require minimal packaging for the product being packaged, using smart layouts to decrease the amount of packaging required, and then reducing the amount of packaging used. Why is Eco-Friendly Packaging Important? Eco-friendly packaging is vital in the fight against plastic p...

Green Packaging Materials

Green packaging, also known as sustainable packaging or eco-friendly packaging, refers to packaging designs which have the lowest environmental impact possible. They achieve this by limiting the packaging waste created, maximizing sustainable materials (such as recyclable or biodegradable packaging elements) and the use of renewable energy during production. In short, sustainable packaging is all about being mindful of your business’s carbon footprint. Why does this matter? Because packaging is one of the biggest outputs of waste for retailers. Last year, the delivery service UPS delivered 5.2 billion packages - that is a lot of packaging materials! According to the EPA, packaging waste makes up one-third of what is delivered to landfills each year. This is a huge source of concern for environmentalists. Many common packaging materials, such as plastic and polystyrene, have an adverse environmental impact. Conventional packaging designs can also be inefficient, using far more m...

Innovative technologies with a low environmental impact

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle are three imperatives the packaging industry is focusing on, in order to promote the use of sustainable materials such as rPET, 100% recycled film and cardboard, that, thanks to their high recycling rate, comply with the so called 3 Rs. The companies of the food, beverage, detergent, personal hygiene, household cleaning and pharmaceutical industry require increasingly efficient, sustainable, and environmentally friendly plants; in order to meet these needs, SMI has constantly been developing solutions that embed these features even in the study and design phase of containers, offering a comprehensive portfolio of innovative technologies with a low environmental impact. Even secondary packaging plays a key role in the marketing strategies of consumer goods manufacturers. Every day in the world billion doses of beverage, food and cleaning and personal care detergents are consumed, sold in containers with thousands of shapes and with several features that req...
