Two Fresh Cracker Disruptions Sends Spot Ethylene Prices Soaring
July 08, 2014

CPChem had a fire at its Port Arthur Olefins complex on Monday causing a cracker furnace to be shutdown.

Equistar Chemical declared Force Majeure for Ethylene produced at its Laporte Petrochemical complex.

Together these disruptions contributed to a sharp rise in spot Ethylene prices, reaching $.60/lb by close of trading on Tuesday.

"LLDPE Producers are doing their best to keep PE prices flat in April while processors are looking for a $.02/lb decrease." "The Ethylene market again saw heightened activity as several crackers remained offline for maintenance. Ethylene for April delivery initially continued higher reaching $.545/lb," "the Polyethylene market activity chilled from its fervent pace and prices were flat across the board.
