LyondellBasell Declares

LyondellBasell declared force majeure this week on linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) made at two plants in Texas and Illinois, according to a letter the producer sent to customers on Wednesday. The letter, dated 18 May, said the declaration stemmed from “unexpected mechanical difficulties in our PE production plants in LaPorte, Texas, and Morris, Illinois.”

Trade News May 2016

Four of five major commodity resins saw North America price increases take hold in April.

Polyethylene prices for April rose by an average of 4 cents per pound as oil prices recovered from less than $38 per barrel early in the month to around $45.

Oil is a global price setter for PE, although natural gas is the most common PE feedstock in North America.
