Shrink Film - a material made up of polymer plastic film. When heat is applied, it shrinks tightly over whatever it is covering. There are a variety of uses for Shrink wrap and shrink film. Some typical shrink wrap applications are for wrapping food, gift baskets, boxes, toys, books, soaps, etc. Below is a breakdown of the two most commonly used types of shrink. PVC Shrink Film - A type of shrink wrap used for various applications. The PVC stands for Polyvinyl chloride. Polyvinyl chloride is the third most-produced plastic in the world. PVC shrink wrap was the most used shrink film until replaced several years ago by polyolefin (POF) shrink wrap. Common Uses of PVC Shrink Film - PVC shrink wrap uses include packaging boxes, CD and DVD packaging, software, small canisters, and other non-edible items. Drawbacks of PVC Shrink Film - Sealing Strength, storage issues, and sealing by-products are common drawbacks of PVC Shrink Wrap. The plasticizer in PVC Shrink wrap hardens in cold

What is temperature-controlled packaging?

Image
Temperature controlled packaging (TCP), also known as thermal or chilled packaging, is designed to preserve the temperature of your products. This helps temperature sensitive goods, like chilled or frozen food, stay in the best possible condition during shipping.  A temperature controlled packaging solution often contains an outer cardboard box, an insulating liner and a coolant (e.g. ice packs). Which services need chilled packaging? When you think about which products are shipped in chilled packaging, most people think about food. And while food is perhaps the most common temperature sensitive product shipped in this specialist packaging, it can be used to protect a wide range of goods, such as pharmaceuticals and chilled / frozen pet products. Chilled packaging can also be used at various points in the supply chain: Cold chain airfreight – For the shipment of perishable goods throughout the airfreight supply chain. Perishable goods delivery – For the shipment of food, phar

Price Increase for Polyethylene is Slipping Away in March.

Image
Domestic Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) hexene contact pricing remained unchanged for the month of February. Flat pricing was a highly contested result for the month as producers were pushing for a $0.03 to $0.05 increase, pointing to modestly improved demand and constrained production in the first two months of the year. However, ample inventory across the supply chain remained the dominant factor giving buyers the ability to push back on proposed price increases for the month. Understand, producers are not giving up on their plans for an increase. Instead of canceling proposed February increases, they have moved their increases to March, and those increases are now between $0.05 and $0.06. On paper, producers’ insist the increase is needed because of higher demand domestically, and specifically high demand in exports to Asia and Latin America. Behind the scenes we know operating margins at these producers are at a ten year low. Like any business in the past two years, re

Packaging trends people can expect in 2023. So, what were they?

Image
Reducing operating costs through packaging – it should come as no surprise that businesses will want to control operating costs in the tough economic climate. However, many people will not always pinpoint packaging as a big business cost. But the right packaging solution can drastically cut operating costs in a number of areas, including warehousing and transport, as well as labor costs and damages. So, reducing costs in packaging will be a key trend in 2023! Putting carbon reduction at the heart of packaging strategies – sustainability has become more and more important to businesses, as well as consumers. In fact, 27% of consumers reported that they won’t buy from companies who don’t use sustainable packaging. On top of this, more businesses are focusing on serious carbon reduction, which is a key in the fight against climate change. When it comes to packaging, materials matter, but so do the carbon emissions associated with the manufacturing and use of the packaging. In 2023, we

Understanding Corrugated and Box Specifications

Image
Most boxes are made from corrugated cardboard. This type of cardboard is made from a fluted or waved piece of paper sandwiched between two flat pieces of paper. There are three main types of corrugated cardboard you’ll come across when it comes to cartons. Single wall – one layer of fluted board is sandwiched between two sheets of liner board. This would make a single wall cardboard carton. Double wall – two layers of fluting that are glued to three layers of liner board. This would make a double wall cardboard carton, which is stronger than using single wall alone. Triple wall – three layers of fluting are laminated with four liner boards. This would make a triple or tri-wall box – the most heavy-weight and durable of all boxes. Fluting profiles:   Fluting is the wavy or fluted piece of paper inside corrugated cardboard that helps to strengthen the boxes. It’s what creates the stripey grain like texture you would see when looking at a piece of cardboard. It can vary in wid

How to Measure a Corrugated Box

Image
The dimensions of a corrugated box always refer to the internal measurements (the usable space that your products will go in), not external; this is because different grading and fluting, it can alter the thickness of the corrugated board itself.   Corrugated box dimensions are usually expressed as: Length (L) x Width (W) x Height (H). Length = the longest opening dimension Width = the shorted opening dimension Height = the dimension from the top of the opening to the base of the box (sometimes referred to as depth). The corrugated boxes you choose should accommodate the range of product you stock – from the smallest item to the largest – as well as any protective packaging (e.g., air bubble wrap or paper cushioning) you’ll need for shipping. Ensuring you get the size of your corrugated boxes right is important, due to the effect across your supply chain, from minimum order quantities, through to storage and customer experience. Quick tip – If your corrugated box is too b

A Guide to Corrugated Cartons

Image
Corrugated cardboard is one of the most used materials in the world.  Considering the continued growth of online retail, it’s safe to assume that the popularity of cardboard boxes is here to stay! Cardboard boxes are a much-loved packaging material used by everyone, from large multibillion dollar e-commerce retailers to small Etsy shops! It’s the first product people think about when they say ‘packaging’. They have great versatility, to protect and ship your products and they can be recycled! This guide will cover everything you need to know about cardboard boxes, to learn what will best suit you and your business. But first, a history lesson… The history of cardboard boxes.   Corrugated paper was first invented in the 19th century as a means to reinforce top hats! The first pleated paper was patented in England in 1856 by Edward G. Healy and Edward E Allen. Almost two decades later, people started to use corrugated paper as a protective packaging material. Initially, it was u

Ways to deliver the WOW factor for your customers.

Image
Brand loyalty is vital for every business. Some businesses get it right and have a fanatical customer base, but what is it that they do differently to engage customers in this way? You will find those companies with the highest brand loyalty typically don’t just do what they promise; they also deliver a WOW factor – something above and beyond customer expectations.   It does not need to be a grand gesture. Sometimes it’s the small, thoughtful things that can mean a lot. What does that have to do with packaging? While the WOW factor typically starts with great customer service and ease of ordering, it should most definitely be sustained up to and including the moment your customer receives their product.   Whether it’s purchased off the shelf or received through the post, the customer reaction to the packaging is a vital part of their shopping experience. Below are a few considerations to help inject the WOW factor into your packaging: 1. Get the product there first time and in

Polyester Strapping Advantages over Steel Strapping

Image
Quick Pak High Performance Polyester Advantage.   Unlike alternative strapping products, our polyester combines the strength of steel strapping with the safety and economy of plastic to maximize performance. The result is a more secure load at a lower cost than many alternatives. Some of the many advantages of our polyester over alternative products are: Split Resistance – A small nick or cut will not propagate across the width of the strap. High Retained Tension – The high tension capability of our high-performance polyester allows it to be applied tight. Once it’s on your load, it stays tight, 50% tighter than nylon and up to five times tighter than polypropylene. Elongation Recovery – Applied properly, our high-performance polyester will stretch under tension. However, most of the elongation is recovered after the initial application. The result is a strap that stays tight even when loads are shrinking and settling during transit. Environmentally Sound – our polyester i

Time to Automate your Packing Area

Image
You’ve decided you need to reduce your labor costs and add a case packing machine. But the more suppliers you look at, the more they all seem to look the same. To help you narrow your list of companies, we offer up this list of things that potential machine suppliers should be able to do.   1) Provide customized machine options when you need them. Choosing a supplier that can customize their case packing machines to meet your specifications is a sure sign that they have a team of designers and engineers on-site allowing them to constantly innovate. We don’t expect a supplier to customize every option you need, but even the ability to run it past their engineering or R&D team is telling. If you ask for a customized option and all you get is silence, it’s likely they’re not designing, engineering and building their own machines. You want to make sure you are choosing a proactive supplier that is motivated to help you reach your goals and is driven to innovate. 2) Deliver to b

Reduce the amount of Plastic in your Packaging

Image
If you’ve just completed your waste packaging report or reviewed your packaging use, you may be pondering ways to reduce the volume of plastic packaging that has been used. We have two “quick ways” that typically result in an overall reduction of plastic material. Quick Way One – Review the amount of stretch wrap you use. If you use stretch wrap, this is a great product to start targeting your reduction. Low micron performance machine applied film can offer the same load containment as a higher micron stretch but with fewer wraps, significantly reducing the weight of film used to wrap each pallet. If you are using hand pallet wrap to wrap 15 or more pallets per day, then it could be time to consider switching to a machine. Stretch wrap automation ensures that the wrap is stretched to capacity before application, this reduces the amount of material used per wrap of each pallet. As well as the environmental benefit it also delivers cost savings – you’re using less material.

How to Pack Temperature Sensitive Food Products

Image
Covid changed the way that we purchased our food.  Many of us turned to supermarkets for home deliveries, ordered food care packages for elderly relatives, foodie treats to comfort ourselves or recipe boxes to break the monotony and inspire culinary adventure. Food retailers were forced to find new routes to market – independent stores switched to offering local food deliveries or instore collection, with many taking the plunge to open online stores offering nationwide delivery. If you are considering selling your culinary delights online and sending them through UPS, Fedex or USPS network, you need to consider the length of the journey and the impact it will have on your produce. If your goods are perishable, maintaining consistent temperatures in transit may be problematic. They will probably encounter more than one distribution warehouse and move between multiple vehicles before reaching their destination. If your product is temperature sensitive, you can stabilize their journ
