LLDPE: Stretch Wrap Demand Up On Improving Business Outlook Resin producers issue new 5 cpp price increase for October with no agreement on implementation. Order books look better on reports of depleted Distributor inventories. Due to continuing rising feedstock costs, all polyethylene resin suppliers have successfully implemented a $.04/lb increase effective September 1, 2009. As a result of these raw material increases, we will implement a 6% price increase on all orders received on or after October 1, 2009 and on shipments effective October 15, 2009. All orders received prior to October 1, 2009 must call for immediate shipment. We reserve the right to accept or deny orders and will limit acceptance to normal order levels based on historical sales. In addition to the September 1 price increase, all resin suppliers have announced a $.04/lb increase effective October 1, 2009. PE prices were steady this week but trading was relatively quiet. Several participants said that a 4 cpp contract price increase proposed in September was largely implemented. Producers have issued a 5 cpp contract price increase for October, but no agreement on implementation has been reached yet. Market Analyst October 2009

A PE market analyst commented that the September PE price hike seemed to come out of nowhere. "The drivers that would have helped it get through are already gone,". "There's little domestic demand and almost no buying in Asia. But [PE makers] stuck to their guns and said "Go buy from someone else, then." North American PE prices now have climbed an average of 17 cents per pound in 2009. That works out to an increase of almost 30 percent, based on average selling prices for dairy blow molding grades of high density PE. Average U.S. selling prices for resin have bounded up since July 1, fueled by rapid rises in feedstock prices. Benzene - a key feedstock used in the production of many commodity resins - closed at $2.92 per gallon in July, up almost 25 percent from June. August could bring more of the same, with benzene set to close at $3.65 per gallon, an increase of an additional 25 percent. PE prices softened this week and trading was relatively light. Producers have proposed 4-cent increases for July, and an additional 4-cent increase to for August. The outcome of the July increase initiative has not officially been determined.
