Swap Plastic for Paper Packaging.

Image
Has your business thought about making sustainable changes?  If you want to be a more environmentally friendly business, swap plastic for paper with these easy sustainable changes to transform your packaging. Swap from plastic tape to sustainable paper tape:   This is always one of the first sustainable packaging swaps we recommend because it is such a simple change! Ditching plastic tape and using paper tape to seal your boxes is an instant win as you are automatically eliminating one category of plastic from your packing materials. Paper tape is available as both self-adhesive and water-activated versions, and it creates a strong and secure seal. Due to its strength, you can often use much less paper tape compared to plastic. So, this reduces your use of packaging material overall. Paper tape is 100% recyclable too, which means there is no need to remove it from boxes before recycling.   This makes it much easier for end-consumers to recycle at home. Cast and Blown Pallet Stretch Wrap

Image
There are two different types of stretch wrap: blown stretch wrap and cast stretch wrap. These two types have their similarities, but there are also many differences between them. This includes the way that they are manufactured, their application use, and more. It is important to choose the right kind of stretch wrap for your secondary packaging needs. If you use the wrong type of film for your load, it could lead to product loss or damage during freight shipment, along with other issues, such as difficulties reading or scanning. two. Which One Is Better?   Neither type of stretch wrap is inherently better than the other. They are simply better suited for different purposes. You can compare these two types of stretch wrap in seven categories: load retention, film memory, film yield, puncture resistance, cling, visual clarity, and noise of unwind. Understanding the differences between cast and blown stretch wrap when it comes to these seven factors is the easiest way to determine whi

BOPP – Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene Bags

Image
BOPP bags are produced by laminating a reverse printed film to a woven fabric which is then manufactured into a bag. The film is stretched in both the machine direction (MD) and across machine direction (AMD). The result is a material with superior strength at low gauges, flatness, clarity, and excellent printability.  This construction is in high demand due to its strength and superior picture-like print quality. Printing is achieved by applying the inks directly onto the film which is adhered to a woven fabric using a laminate coating. BOPP film is reverse printed, resulting in a protected interior print (between the film and laminate/woven fabric) which will not scratch or be easily damaged during normal use.   The BOPP bag’s appeal includes dimensional stability, maximum water resistance, and high impact graphics that improve marketability, as well as optional anti-skid features. Uses of a BOPP Bag:   Since the BOPP bag is so versatile, its list of uses is infinite! They are used

Using Warning Labels in Packaging

Image
Shippers should treat every item they send out with the care it needs, and the best possible version of that care. If they are fragile, use the right cushioning, materials, and packaging to prevent damage during transit. If they are not, do what you can to preserve them anyway. When it comes to hazardous materials, though, you cannot afford to skimp on quality. If anything happens to them, the consequences can be disastrous and deadly. Hazardous labels are a crucial part of maintaining safety during shipping. Hazard labels serve a similar function for packages and vehicles containing hazardous materials. These bright, colorful, diamond-shaped tags are designed to communicate one important message: handle with extreme care and caution. The numbers and symbols provide further details on proper handling for those who understand them, namely shippers and truckers. They come in two forms. Some labels are meant to be stuck on boxes and other containers. Placards must be placed on truck

Pre-Stretched Pallet Wrap

Image
In the packaging world, pre-stretched film has emerged as a game-changer for industries seeking efficient, cost-effective, and secure packaging solutions. With its unique properties and advantages, pre-stretched film has gained widespread recognition across various sectors. What Is Pre-Stretched Film?   Pre-stretched film is a specialized type of packaging material which is used across many industries to secure and stabilize loads on pallets during transportation or storage. Unlike traditional stretch wrap, which requires manual stretching during the application, pre-stretched film is manufactured with an inherent stretch, and it is wound onto rolls, reducing the effort needed during wrapping. Despite being much thinner than traditional stretch wrap, it contains similar strength parameters, meaning it weighs less - approximately ⅔ less - but is just as durable. Pre-stretched film is beneficial in industries such as: Manufacturing: Securing raw materials and finished goods on palle

Water Activated Reinforced Paper Tape

Image
Water-activated tape (WAT), often referred to as gummed tape, is a robust and efficient solution for carton sealing. Unlike traditional pressure-sensitive tapes, WAT is activated by water, creating a highly secure bond with cardboard surfaces. Here is a breakdown of how water-activated tape works and why it is essential for shipping and packaging. Water-activated tape consists of a starch-based adhesive that, when moistened, forms a strong bond with the surface of corrugated cardboard. This bond is so secure that the tape fuses with the carton, creating a tamper-evident seal. Here is the step-by-step process: Activation: The adhesive on the tape is dry and dormant when on the roll. To activate it, the tape must pass through a heated water dispenser. A consistent layer of water moistens the adhesive, triggering its bonding properties. Application: Once the tape is moistened, it is applied to the carton. Since the adhesive interacts directly with the cardboard fibers, it quickl

What is VCI Film

Image
VCI stands for Volatile or Vapor Corrosion Inhibitors.   VCI film is packaging that consists of polyethylene film that has been impregnated with chemical formulations that are unique to each manufacturer. While the underlying formulations can vary significantly, the finished products function similarly in that they release very low concentrations (typically in parts per ten-thousandth) of invisible corrosion inhibiting vapors into the surrounding air. The vapor molecules subsequently condense onto exposed metal surfaces and form a molecular corrosion shield that can protect against rust and other forms of corrosion for many years. Typical service life is up to three (3) years and even longer in some cases. When the VCI packaging is later removed, all vapor corrosion inhibiting molecules rapidly evaporate. This leaves the metal parts clean and ready for immediate use. Protection:   Moisture is metal’s biggest enemy. When temperatures or humidity levels change, unprotected metals c

The effect of packaging on transport costs.

Image
Whether you use your own transport or work with freight companies to make deliveries, transport costs can stack up.  You might not realize it, but any packaging you use will have a direct impact on your transport efficiency, and costs. So, what should you consider when it comes to packaging and its effect on transport? The size of your packaging can have a big knock-on effect. If any of your boxes or bags are too big for your products, you will need extra void fill which adds to the pack weight AND they will take up more cubic space. In turn, this means you will get less on a pallet or incur higher freight costs if they are calculated by volume. So, it is important not to take a “one size fits all” approach when it comes to your packaging. Think about the overall packaging footprint and how best to pack a product to minimize the space it uses.  If your volumes are high enough, you could invest in automated solutions that size your packaging for you – so each pack is optimized.

Steel vs. Plastic Strapping Tools

Image
You have heard debates about steel vs. plastic strapping for your packaging needs. There are arguments both for and against either material. Some people will point out that steel can be used for even the heaviest of loads, while others argue that it tends to corrode if it is left outside. Plastics are strong and flexible, but they might not be the right choice for every load. One thing you have thought less about are the key differences between steel and plastic strapping tools. While everyone’s busy debating which material is best to use, less attention has been paid to the tools you need to use for either type. You know that you cannot simply switch out one material for another. Both plastic and steel strapping require their own tools, and the differences between them highlight why. Steel strapping tools and plastic strapping tools also known as banding tools come in various strap widths and thickness, designed to handle the specific demands of their respective industry applica

As companies strive to meet sustainability goals, understanding how to successfully implement recycled content in packaging operations is crucial. Recycled stretch packaging is an eco-friendly option that can help reduce the environmental impact of packaging. It is made from post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR), which is material that has already been used by consumers, recycled, and then repurposed into new products. Why Transition to PCR Recycled Content? Reducing reliance on virgin plastic helps decrease greenhouse gas emissions and the volume of plastic waste in landfills and oceans which reduces your environmental impact. Steps to Implement Recycled Content in Packaging Operations: Start by assessing your current usage of virgin plastic pallet wrap in your operations and ensure you understand the volu

Tips for Troubleshooting Shrink Film Sealing Issues

Image
From bad seals to burn-through, this information helps you address shrink packaging’s most common film and equipment issues. When an operator is experiencing issues with seal integrity, their first instinct is usually to increase the heat on the sealer. Unfortunately, in most cases, this is the wrong adjustment. The first question you should always ask when something is off is “what has changed since it was running right?   Start with the Big Three:   99% of all shrink packaging problems come down to three basic issues: 1. Temperature (too hot/cool). 2. Time (too much/little). 3. Pressure (incorrect seal pressure and tension). Here are some things you can try if you are having trouble getting good seals on your L-bar sealer: Check the seal wires: Make sure the seal wires are installed correctly and are not loose, incompatible, or broken. Check the seal-bed pad and tape: Make sure the seal-bed pad and tape are not worn and need to be replaced. Check the seal plane: I
