Hand wrapping a pallet is painful business.   Bending over to wrap down to 2” from the floor and do it while walking backwards around a pallet 4 to 5 times and continue 4 more times around all the way to the top.   Then you have 20-30 pallets per day to wrap.   Back issues, tripping hazard, workers comp claim, it’s not if you get hurt – it’s when.   Don’t forget to add in the 8 Lbs roll of stretch wrap to that while you’re at it. On Friday, March 23rd, the Pulp and Paper publication confirmed the $50 per ton linerboard increase that had previously been announced by all major corrugated manufactures. Key reason behind the increase are the growth in demand for corrugated relative to capacity constraints, declining inventories, and ever-increasing transportation costs due to fuel and the nationwide driver shortage.  While we understand that increases are painful, we cannot ignore material costs when commodity prices fluctuate. We want to let you know that the Newsprint market is changing. Following a 2017 investigation by the US Department of Commerce into Canadian Newsprint plants for dumping product into the US market, while unfairly subsidizing their own market, approximately 25 Canadian Newsprint producers are being hit with preliminary countervailing duties of about 6.5%.  Canada is the world's largest exporter of Newsprint and the majority of the Newsprint sold in the US comes from Canada. The US Department of Commerce will make a follow up decision on the anti-dumping duties in March 2018 and US International Trade Commission will be asked to make a ruling on the measures in August 2018. For now, we are expecting increased prices on Newsprint as well as potential scarcity. We will try to keep you abreast of the situation as new information becomes available.
