Corrugated Box Flute Types

Corrugated Flutes are the S shaped waves/arches of a corrugated box that makes up the board. This is called the boards corrugation. Flutes are essentially the reinforcement that make up the board. They run parallel to the depth of the container and give it its rigidity and crushing/stacking strength. As well as providing stacking strength, flutes also provide insulation that protects products from sudden temperature changes.

Generally speaking, larger flutes like A & B profile provide greater strength and cushioning, while smaller flute profiles like D & E provide better printability and foldability.

B flutes have 42-50 flutes per foot and are 1/8″ thick. They provide the second highest arch size.
B flutes provide good stacking strength and crushing resistance. Ideally used for canned goods and displays.

C flutes have 39-43 flutes per foot and are 11/64″ thick. They are the medium between A flute and B flute and are very common.
C flutes provide good cushioning, stacking and printing properties. Ideally used for glass, furniture and dairy.

E flutes have 94 flutes per foot and are 1/16″ thick. The board profile is super-thin which in turn reduces box size and saves store space.
E flutes provide the greatest crush resistance and a super printing surface which make it an excellent choice for die-cut custom boxes.

Corrugated Board Strength

Board strength are all the factors that define how strong the box should be. There are a number of questions you must ask yourself before you can decide how strong a particular box should be manufactured.

Such as:

The nature of the products being packaged

The total weight of the box

The size of the box

How the cardboard box will be stacked, stored, and transported.

Quick Pak Inc provides you with two different levels of customization options when selecting box strength. The first is the flute type and the second is using the edge crush test.

Printing on Corrugated Boxes and the Different Method

Flexo Line:  The most basic type of printing on corrugated. Allows the addition of company or package content info to the surface of the box, at a relatively low cost. Graphics tend to be basic line art and text, utilizing between 1 and 3 colors.

Flexo Process:  Used for higher end graphics utilizing the 4 process colors. It provides a stronger visual impact, and enables photo quality images to be used. Because 4 color print plates are required, the total print plate costs tend to be more expensive than Flexo Line. Minimum run quantities tend to be much higher than Flexo line.

Flood Coated:  Allows the use of a solid 100% coverage of color. Most commonly used with POP displays and packaging for retail applications. Flood coats can be applied with stock print plates, so die costs are not an expense for the client.

Label Laminate:  Achieved by gluing printed sheets to the outer surface of the corrugated material. Enables the application of a glossy process color (photo quality) image, and is a reasonable cost option for low to medium quantity runs. Label size is limited by the maximum sheet size of most commercial presses (28" x 40"). It provides a clean professional appearance that looks comparable to high end packaging similar to that used with software and electronics. Labels can be applied as a 100% coverage, or as a spot label in conjunction with other Flexo line printing.

Screen Print:   Another way of applying graphic intensive images directly to the outer surface of the corrugated package. This process is most commonly used for POP displays and retail packaging applications, and can be more cost effective is short run quantities. Size limitations are larger than label laminate, and color combinations greater than 4 are possible.

Litho Laminate:  Provides a similar finished product as label laminate, but requires much higher minimum runs (typically 10-20K). The printed surface is actually part of the packaging material, as opposed to label laminate which is added manually.

Preprint:  Providing a similar finished product to Flexo process, this process involves the client purchasing preprinted rolls of paper that are used in manufacturing linerboard. It requires very high volume runs, and a significant upfront investment by the client, but can be a cost effective way to apply impactful graphics at those quantities. Most commonly used in the food and beverage industry, like beer cases and mandarin orange boxes.

Corrugated Boxes

History of Corrugated Boxes

The more people learn about corrugated boxes, the more they realize that there is nothing "basic" about them. With every box made up of three sheets of paper, the combinations are limitless. But don't worry... that is what we are here for. We've tried to make this page informative with easy to digest information that will get you up to speed on the basics of corrugated cardboard.

Cardboard Box Types

Regular Slotted Containers

This is the most common box style. All flaps are the same length from the score to the edge. Ideal for: shipping small individual items such as cups and mugs, books.

Corrugated Trays

Corrugated Trays are basically trays to hold other objects. They are advantageous when product visibility and easy handling are of prime importance. Ideal for: food and beverage industry products such as bottled water, soft drinks, snack foods, and bulk packaged processed foods.

Half Slotted Containers

Half slotted containers are similar to regular slotted containers except that they have only one set of flaps. The opposite side of the box is open, which allows it to slide over an item. Ideal for: large and heavy objects such as refrigerators and washing machines.

Die Cut Custom

These are custom corrugated boxes developed to exact specifications depending on customer requirements. We can manufacture custom boxes with FULL color, available in all styles and custom sizes. Ideal for: unique products with special requirements such as cosmetic product boxes, toy product boxes, gift product boxes.

Full Over Lap

The outer flaps overlap the full width of the box making it especially resistant to rough handling. All flaps are the same depth, and their depth equals the width of the box. Ideal for: heavy objects that require extra support such as refrigerators and washing machines.

Roll End Tuck Top

These are simple unglued boxes that need to be folded when assembled. These are great for shipping narrow items. Ideal for: vitamin packaging, retail packaging, coffee packaging, tea packaging.

Steel Strapping and the Price Increases

Steel reinforcement bars are about as unglamorous an industrial product as one can get. Their rally in China this week is anything but, with a surge to the highest since 2014 that’s helping to boost iron ore.

Rebar futures jumped for the fourth straight day on the Shanghai Futures Exchange, advancing 6.1 percent to 2,750 yuan ($424) a metric ton. The product that’s used to strengthen concrete is 20 percent higher this week, and up 54 percent in 2016. Iron ore futures in Dalian rose to the highest in more than a year as benchmark Metal Bulletin Ltd. prices powered above $70 for the first time since January 2015.

“You’ve got a tight market, you’ve got momentum, and you’ve got this fundamental driver for steel in the government boosting the infrastructure and housing side of things,” said Chris Weston, chief market strategist at IG Ltd. in Melbourne. “The rebar price is really leading the iron ore price at the moment.”

The rallies in steel and iron ore in 2016 are in contrast to last year, when slowing economic growth in China hammered prices and too much supply chased too little demand. This year, policy makers in China have talked up growth and added stimulus, presiding over a revival in the property market. Steel demand in China may increase as much as 10 percent in 2016, according to Credit Suisse Group AG.

‘Getting Better’

“Firstly and perhaps of no surprise intuitively (but often overlooked in the market) rising steel and iron ore prices suggest demand is getting better,” Credit Suisse said in a report on global steel markets dated April 20. “The magnitude of the iron ore and steel price hikes suggest that not only is demand improving but expectations should have moved very much into the inflationary camp for steel and iron ore.”

Ore with 62 percent content delivered to Qingdao climbed 8.8 percent to $70.46 a dry ton on Thursday, according to Metal Bulletin. The price, which is set daily, has rebounded 84 percent since bottoming in December, surprising many banks that had forecast further losses in 2016.

Mills in China, which make about half the world’s supply, have boosted output to an all-time high as property prices in bigger cities jumped and higher steel prices improved margins, reversing a squeeze from last year. Crude-steel production soared to 70.65 million tons in March, according to data last week.

The record output by mills has so far failed to replenish inventories as the government cranks up stimulus. Stockpiles of rebar contracted for a sixth week, declining 6.8 percent in the period to April 15, for the biggest drop since October 2014, according to Shanghai Steel home Information Technology Co.

China’s economy gathered pace in March as a surge in new credit helped the property sector to rebound, with housing values in first-tier cities soaring. The trend has drawn concern from investors including billionaire George Soros, who said on Wednesday the credit-growth figures should be viewed as a warning.

“Why steel production jumped so rapidly was because the profitability of the steelmakers have improved dramatically,” Georgi Slavov, head of basic resources research at Marex Spectron, said in an interview in Singapore. The price gains “will not be valid for too long because supply of iron ore will improve, production of steel will gradually weaken, therefore demand for iron ore will weaken.”

Cold Temperature Packaging.

Here in Florida, spring has now given way to summer, which is great news for the air conditioning industry, but not so great for people ordering chocolates.

This time of year is a challenge for all shippers of temperature-sensitive products. A package containing insulin, which must be protected from excessive temperatures, will remain unspoiled longer on a Minneapolis doorstep at 65 degrees Fahrenheit than on a Phoenix doorstep in 115 degrees.

Temperature-sensitive packaging can help ensure the contents arrive in optimal condition in the designated temperature range. Avoiding spoilage is not, however, only about the package itself; it's also about the ambient temperatures in the environment that the package will pass through.

For example, a package traveling via ground from Florida to Southern California in August will encounter different temperatures than one traveling from Massachusetts to Wisconsin in January, so it's important to design packaging that not only suits the product but also can protect it in the different environments it will encounter in transit. The hotter and longer the ride, the more coolant and insulation are necessary. The colder and shorter the ride, the less is needed.

You might ask, "If the package design can protect temperature-sensitive contents for a four-day haul across the country in July, it's going to be fine for the same journey in January, right?" While the answer is "yes," consider that, by shipping with an over-engineered package – meaning more packaging and cooling material than needed – you're throwing away money.

It can take expensive materials to create packaging and energy to move packages. Over-engineering is a waste and an unnecessary drain on the bottom line. What's required instead is a packaging solution that reflects three elements: the product's requirements, the conditions encountered in the package transit route and the amount of risk the shipper is prepared to accept.

Let the packaging experts at Quick Pak Inc help you get the correct packaging for the application.

LyondellBasell Declares

LyondellBasell declared force majeure this week on linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) made at two plants in Texas and Illinois, according to a letter the producer sent to customers on Wednesday. The letter, dated 18 May, said the declaration stemmed from “unexpected mechanical difficulties in our PE production plants in LaPorte, Texas, and Morris, Illinois.”

Trade News May 2016

Four of five major commodity resins saw North America price increases take hold in April.

Polyethylene prices for April rose by an average of 4 cents per pound as oil prices recovered from less than $38 per barrel early in the month to around $45.

Oil is a global price setter for PE, although natural gas is the most common PE feedstock in North America.
