UVI Pallet Stretch Film

UVI (Ultra Violet Inhibitor) stretch wrap is used in palletizing products for long term outside storage. Weather Machine Stretch Wrap is a clear stretch film which provides protection from the elements. The ultra-violet additives protects this stretch film from photo degradation while maintaining strength and load holding integrity during prolonged outdoor exposure.  UVI machine stretch wrap formulation is tested under controlled conditions (accelerated aging weatherometer).
Do we really need an UVI Film?
UVI additives can be expensive. If you plan to store the film outside for any length of time, you need a UVI film. Most UVI films will last for an average of 3-6 months. It requires high concentrations of UVI to guarantee a film to last 9-12 months, which can increase the cost significantly.
The effect of UVI additive is often seasonal and varies from one location to another.  A UVI Film that will last 9 months from September to May, could only last 3 months during June, July and August.

What is a pressure-sensitive label?

What is a pressure-sensitive label?

What is a pressure sensitive label? Are they stickers, product identifiers, decals or a component of decorative packaging? Yes!  Pressure-sensitive labels are used everywhere from toys, food bottles, medical devices, and corrugated boxes, to plastic pouches and so much more.

Let's break it down:  A pressure-sensitive label, or self-adhesive label, is made up of three layers: a face stock, an adhesive and a release liner. We refer to this as the "label sandwich." When a label is manufactured, these three components are sandwiched together to create a label material that can be printed on, laminated, die-cut, and finally peeled off and applied to your product.

Facestock:  The facestock is the main part of the label. The material could be paper, film, or metallic foil. This is the layer where the ink is applied on press. For specific applications, a topcoat or laminate may be applied to protect the label artwork or enhance certain areas of the design.

Adhesive:  The adhesive is what makes the label stick to the surface of the product or packaging. For glue-applied (cut & stack) labels, this process happens as the label is being applied. A pressure-sensitive label is manufactured to have the adhesive already applied to the face stock when you receive your roll or sheet of labels.

The adhesive type will depend on your application and environment in which the label will be used. Many different types of adhesive are available including versions that stick under cold and wet conditions, some that release easily, some that stick permanently and others that are resealable.

For example, a label that is applied to a durable good, like an air conditioner, will require an adhesive that sticks to metal in an outdoor environment and can last for years. If the label is only going to be used once, say for a shipping carton label, a strong adhesive isn't necessary. You might even select an adhesive that is re-positionable for a peel and redeem coupon.

Liner:  The liner is the paper or film that makes up the backing web material. There are options that range from semi-bleached paper or craft paper, to a stronger clear film liner. The liner is coated with a special material that makes it possible to remove the label no matter how strong the adhesive you select.

November LLDPE Price Increase

November LLDPE Price Increase

Most U.S. resin producers have either revised their prior price increases or nominated a fresh price increase for November LLDPE. Through these actions, the increases have effectively been consolidated to $.05/lb effective Nov 1st. October PE contracts still need to be negotiated and settled before the Nov increases come into play: Most Polyethylene producers are trying to roll Oct contract pricing flat s. Processors (film makers)are looking for another decrease. PE contracts are down $.09/lb over the last 2 months.
Trade Reports October 2015

Resin makers announce price increase. Read the letters - (Exxon Mobil) (Dow) (Westlake) (LyondellBasell) (Nova)

"resin trading continued to transact at an elevated pace, which can be somewhat attributed to improved demand and growing expectations for higher prices ahead."

"PE producers are looking to hold Oct contracts steady at Sept levels and there is a $.05/lb increase on the table for November."

"International resin markets have firmed a bit and large volumes of PE have shipped offshore."

"Natural Gas, lost $.072/mmBtu and headed into the weekend at $2.43/mmBtu, a new low close."

"Ethylene trading was very active and prices moved significantly higher. At least 3 major crackers in the Gulf remain offline for maintenance and the supply restrictions are apparently catching up to the market."

"PE prices were up a penny."

"Processor demand was very good as they look to secure extra material ahead of the $.05/lb price increase nominated for November. While it is too early to gauge the likelihood of the increase implementation, sentiment has shifted away from outright bearish and has been taking on a firming undertone."

Revolution ST Pallet Wrapper At A Price You Cannot Ignore

NEW Installation of a Revolution ST Pallet Wrapper At A Price You Cannot Ignore.

Quick Pak Inc has installed another Revolution ST Pallet Wrapper at one of our customers.  We encourage all companies to enter the automated pallet wrapping market with minimum cost and maximum benefits.

All palletized loads benefit from automated wrapping as opposed to using hand wrap film applied by an operator. Automated wrapping removes those Health & Safety concerns employers should have about the application of hand film which can cause serious back problems and associated trip hazards when moving around a pallet on the floor with a roll of film. Installation and operation of the wrapper is so easy and straightforward, there is no need for a time consuming, money wasting, on site demonstration.

For as little as $4,990 you and your company can soon be the proud owners of a Revolution ST pallet wrapper and start benefitting from cheaper wrapping costs (compared to hand wrap) from the first day it arrives on site.  Or you can get the machine free with film order (200 rolls)

Yes, just $4,990, send your vehicle to our warehouse and off you go - the machine is flat packed for on-site installation using your own, non-technical, staff. The machine comes with a detailed manual explaining how to install, connect and operate the machine. Installation is very straightforward and could not be easier. The mast is already pre wired internally and secured to the base with a fixed hinge so all you have to do is raise the mast and secure with the bolts supplied. The film carriage is already in place so everything is ready to go in a few minutes.  Should you experience any problems or need clarification regarding any part of the installation or operation you can call our tech support line and receive step by step help.

The Revolution ST Pallet stretch wrapper is a conventional turntable wrapper with vertical mast. Revolution ST  is supplied with a core brake film carriage which makes it ideal for wrapping a huge and diverse range of palletized loads using normal everyday stretch film as well as higher performing "pre stretched" films which are gaining popularity daily.

The machine comes with an electronic parts manual and a hard copy version which allows you to identify parts down to the last nut, bolt and washer.

As a reflection on the quality build of these machines, they come with a 3 year warranty (including wear parts if you are using our stretch film) giving you added confidence.

How to Bundle you Packages for Shipping

How to Bundle you Packages for Shipping.

UPS and FedEx are very specific about how they want you to safely bundle your packages.  There are three ways to accomplish this.

The image to the right illustrates how the carriers recommend you strap your packages when bundling them.  They suggest two straps in each direction.  They also discourage the strapping from being used as handles.  This can lead to weakened or broken seals which can result in problems in shipping.

The most common material for these purposes is polypropylene strapping.  This material is available in a variety of widths and break strengths.  The strapping can be applied and sealed with manual tools, battery operated hand-held tools, pneumatic tools, or semi-automatic machines.

For those who will bundle infrequently, tape is an easier option than strapping.  It requires no special tools and is easily applied.

While some carton sealing tapes will suffice, it is highly recommended that filament MOPP tape be used.  This tape most often comes in the form of filament or tensilized tapes.  Filament tape is simply a standard tape but with nylon filament threads running the length of the tape to give it added strength when bundling.

Tensilized tape is similar in construction, but the filaments are manufactured in to the tape and not visible, and they run both the width and length of the tape.  As with most tapes, it's important to use the appropriate thickness based upon the weight of the product being bundled.

Stretch wrap is similar to tape, but does not have any adhesive quality so it will not leave any residue or mar the boxes.  Bundling stretch wrap comes in widths of 2", 3" and 5".  It also should be applied like the strapping, with the stretch wrap being applied in both directions.  Bundling stretch wrap is probably the easiest to apply of the three methods suggested here.  Stretch wrap strength is measured by gauge, or thickness, with the higher number indicating the thicker wrap, and subsequently that which is applicable for heavier weight bundling operations.  Lightweight bundling applications can use lower gauge wraps.

There are three handle types available with bundling wrap.

Standard Core - Comes on a 3" core and ships with one plastic plug-in handle per box
Extended Core - Comes on a 1" extended core so that each roll has its own built-in handle

No matter which of these bundling wraps you choose, the actual wrap is the same - only the core and handle are different.

No matter which method you choose, depending upon your unique needs, bundling your shipping is a clear way to save a potentially significant amount on your shipping.  If you have multiple pieces going to the same destination, this is an option you will want to consider.

If you have any questions about which option may work best for you, or what product will work best, please contact us and we will be happy to help you.

How to Wrap Firewood in Bundles

Stretch Wrap and Firewood Bundling.

Whether you bundle firewood for sale for for your own personal use, stretch wrap is the most preferred way to bundle your material.  Choosing the right wrap is very subjective and there are many options, but the information below should help you determine what will work best for you.

What size stretch wrap do I need?

Bundling Film

This is narrow width stretch wrap that comes in widths of 2", 3" and 5".  Bundling film is a good choice when you want to keep your firewood vented.  It allows you to wrap just the ends, or both ends and the middle, and reduce the possibility of moisture becoming trapped in the wrap.

Hand Wrap

This is a wider wrap that comes in stock widths of 12", 15" and 18".  With the extra width, this can allow for a quicker wrap time and will fit many firewood bundling machines and devices.  All of our hand wrap comes on a standard 3" core.
What gauge stretch wrap should I use?

Ultimately, this is a very subjective question, but there are some guidelines that can be used.  The typical application for stretch film is holding together boxes of product on a skid weighing typically over 1000lbs, so the wrap has to be able to stretch tightly to hold the load together during the shipping and handling processes.  That is not the case with firewood bundling, where the bundles are small, typically moved by hand, and weigh only a few dozen pounds at most.

For these reasons, we recommend our HYBRiD80 Hand Wrap.  This hand wrap is thinner and less expensive than a traditional 80-90ga film, but has comparable strength when it comes to holding your bundles together.  It has the cling you expect with a standard gauge stretch wrap and will resist the minimal puncture potential presented by firewood.

What are the best tools to use to wrap the firewood?

Handy Wrap:

This is the most common type.  The film comes on a 3" core and each case has one plastic plug-in handle.  This is a good choice if you have one person doing the wrapping, and they do it sporadically.

Extended Core Handy Wrap Banding Film:

This film comes on a 1" extended core and is available only in 5" widths.  The 5" of film is wound on a 10" long core, leaving a 5" long handle built-in to each roll.

With hand wrap, there are a couple of options.  One is our Highlight Hand Held Stretch Wrapper.  The Eliminator allows you to easily wrap bundles as large as 24" x 24" x 24" and up to 70 lbs and it supports stretch wrap between 10-15" wide.

Another option is the Little Nelson Bundling Film Dispenser, which works on 3" core bundling film between 2" and 6" wide.  It is a heavy-duty, ergonomic alternative to the plug-in handles that come with most bundling film.  It features a built-in braking mechanism which allows you greater control over how much stretch you want to apply and where.

Bundling Stretch Pallet Wrap.

Bundling Stretch Pallet Wrap.

Bundling stretch wrap or also called bundling or banding stretch film can be used to fix small items together, and can save time and money replacing heavier and more expensive packaging products.

Bundling wrap can replace the use of tape and twine to packaging small items together. Unlike tapes bundling stretch film will not stick to the product or leave residue.

Our bundling stretch wrap comes in 2in., 3 in., and 5 in. sizes. Options included in these film sizes:

Bundling stretch wrap film on a 3" core w/ plastic handle

Bundling stretch wrap film on a disposable 1" Extended corrugated core.

October Polyethylene Price Increase Adjustments

Several North American resin producers have already announced adjustments to their price increases previously nominated for October Polyethylene. Dow Chemical has issued a 2-cent TVA - Temporary Voluntary Allowance - effectively reducing their $.07/lb price increase to just $.05/lb, matching the magnitude of other company's increases. However, ExxonMobil and Formosa Plastics subsequently each pushed back the implementation of their $.05/lb price increase from October to November, offering to roll contracts flat from September. Other producers will likely follow. It is still just the beginning of the month, and film producers/processors are clamoring for another decrease, so October contract negotiations are far from over...

"Polyethylene resin changed hands at a fairly rapid clip as the month drew to a close. Material for all major commodity grades was readily available for immediate shipment and prices eased a penny across the board. Although producers had widely nominated a price increase averaging $.05/lb for October, it seems highly unlikely that it would become implemented."

Right Stretch Film For The Pallets I Wrap.

Gauge is the most common measure of the thickness of stretch wrap film (sometimes also measured in microns). For example 100 gauge = 25.4 microns = .0254mm = .001in. The higher the gauge number, the thicker the film. So for example a 100 gauge stretch wrap is thicker than 80 gauge, 60 gauge and so on.
LOAD TYPE: First we can look at load type which can be a determining factor in stretch wrap gauge.
Lighter gauge (40-80 Gauge) Stretch Wrap Films are typically required for:
  • Lighter loads, such as foam products, or light food products (snack foods like chips, etc)
  • Even, square loads (also known as A-loads)
  • Little to no puncture potential
Heavier gauge (90-135 Gauge) Stretch Wrap Films are typically required for:
  • Heavy loads, such as fasteners, machine parts, bags of mortar or mulch, etc.
  • Uneven loads with more corners and angles (also known as B- or C-loads)
  • Greater puncture potential
LOAD WEIGHT: Second we can look at load weight which can also help determine in stretch wrap gauge.
  • For loads Up to 1,600 lbs: Recommended Stretch Wrap Gauge: 40-60 Gauge
  • For loads Up to 2,000 lbs: Recommended Stretch Wrap Gauge: 70 Gauge
  • For loads Up to 2,500 lbs: Recommended Stretch Wrap Gauge: 80 Gauge
  • For loads Up to 3,000 lbs: Recommended Stretch Wrap Gauge: 90 Gauge
  • For loads Over 4,000 lbs: Recommended Stretch Wrap Gauge: 120-150 Gauge

An Alternative to the Standard 80 Gauge Stretch Wrap
Gauge Equivalent stretch wrap is the next generation in cast stretch film extrusion technology. The U.S. market is seeing a shift in the stretch film industry to lighter, stronger pallet wrap in both hand and machine grade film. Many top manufacturers have indicated that within 3 - 5 years the 80 gauge will no longer be sold in the market place because of current soaring cost to produce film. We offer and alternative the HYBRiD80.  This line will give you a break from high priced (me too 80 gauge) standard hand and machine stretch wrap. HYBRiD80 is a multi-layered cast film with a metallocene additive that has a high resistance to stretch for superior load retention that will perform as well as an 80 gauge film. It’s sold in a range of 20% -30%+ savings under conventional 80 gauge wrap.

Conclusion:
Ultimately, the thickness needed is subjective. Samples film, when available, is ideal to determine what works best for your needs. Stretch Wrap is typically available in gauges ranging from 40ga - 150ga. Whether you are looking for commodity packaging stretch films or value added specialty film, we are eager to exceed your expectations. Our knowledge staff will help you select the right plastic film at the lowest possible cost.

Printed Pallet Wrap and Colored Stretch Films

Printed Stretch Film and Colored pallet Wrap

Generally, there are four reasons why a company may be interested in printed stretch film (or stretch wrap):
To minimize the possibility of pallets being broken in transit Security/Theft deterrence Warehouse/Internal identification Brand exposure Essentially, printed stretch film is the same as regular stretch film, but with your logo or the text of your choice printed on the roll. In light of the reasons noted above, it can be a very useful option. It can also present its own potential negatives:Neck-down - distortion of the logo/text caused when the film is stretchedOverlap rendering the logo/text illegible or unidentifiableDirection - with a logo, or more particularly with text, the wrap must be applied in a certain direction or it goes on backwards, rendering it illegible

Given the relatively high cost and other limitations of printed stretch wrap, it is not a viable option for most users, though it may look attractive in concept.
Cost - printed stretch wrap can be 2-3 times more expensive than standard stretch wrap

Waste - once stretch wrap is used, it cannot be reused
Redundancy of effort - often, the printed stretch wrap is not the primary wrap and is applied in only one or two layers after the primary wrap has been applied.
Additionally, if printed stretch wrap is not applied correctly, it may actually do your company more harm than good.
There are, however, alternatives to printed stretch wrap that can still meet all or most of the above specified advantages to printed stretch wrap:

Colored Stretch Wrap

This is one of the most cost-effective alternatives. Any printed material will require a custom-run of that product and will also entail artwork and plate charges. Many stretch wrap distributors stock colored stretch wrap, whether it be in the form of bundling film (2" - 6"), hand wrap (10" - 30") or machine wrap (20"+).
Colored stretch wrap can offer security by obscuring the view of the contents of the pallet; can provide internal identification so that personnel know, for example, which skids are returns and which are new; and can minimize the possibility of pallets being broken down because most freight carriers do not use colored film. If you ship with orange film and your customer receives the pallet wrapped in something other than orange, you will know that the load has been tampered with and you can deal with that accordingly with your customer and freight carrier. Like any stretch wrap, colored stretch wrap cannot be reused. While more expensive than standard stretch wrap, colored stretch wrap is still less expensive than printed stretch wrap and is typically available in smaller minimum quantities and can be used as a simple over-wrap rather than as a primary wrap, or can be used as the primary wrap as well.
Colored stretch wrap can also be combined with custom printed labels in order to get your brand name on the pallet and generate awareness of your company. This combination can achieve all of the goals related to using printed stretch wrap and is much more flexible and cost-effective.

Printed Pallet Covers

This is one of the more cost-effective options that will accomplish brand exposure along with security and identification. One advantage printed pallet covers offer that is unique is that there is the possibility they may be re-used, particularly if utilized internally. They may be used under clear stretch wrap or over any wrapped load. The print will not be susceptible to distortion (or neck-down) or overlap as would printed stretch wrap. Printed pallet covers are available in a variety of sizes, colors and in different mil thicknesses, depending upon your needs. A guide to know how to measure for a pallet cover can be found here.
Colored pallet covers, printed or unprinted, may also help you accomplish your goals. As opposed to colored stretch wrap, which is very thin and requires several overlapping wraps to achieve any significant degree of opacity (solid color, lacking transparency), colored pallet covers are already thick enough to provide the level of opacity needed for security and/or identification purposes. Samples of stock pallet covers are available at no charge to help you most accurately determine what size and thickness work best for your needs before you make any special printed and/or colored order.

Printed Tape

Printed tape is another cost-effective alternative to printed stretch wrap. An advantage to this option is that there are stock prints available for security purposes or to discourage the load from being broken down in transit. Custom printing is available as well. Printed tape can also be used for other applications - such as on boxes, drums, or any other container or packaging option. Printed tape can provide brand exposure, internal identification, and can discourage your pallets from being broken.
